FINE CHINESE, ISLAMIC & ASIAN ART
Lot 126
Big ivory carving of exquisite making, portraying Guanyin and entirely carved in the tusk of an elephant. The deity is pictured as an elegant lady, carrying a basket full of flowers on the right shoulder, and an upturned bunch of flowers in her left hand. The delty is portrayed as standing on some stylized flowery and soft-looking clouds, and wearing a sumptuous dress with a train, and a jacket which, opening in the front, shows the jewels on the chest, while on the wrists movable bracelets are worn. The face is sweet and gracious, framed by an elaborate chignon hairstyle, and enriched by an ornament depicting a bird of paradise. The sculpture is noteworthy for the elegance of the carving, especially in the depiction of the floral elements. Accompanying the item is the expertise by Robert Bellet, from 1994.
