200 CHINESE, ASIAN, ISLAMIC AND INDIAN ART
Lot 289
In the shape of an upturned pear, reaches the maximum width in correspondence with the wings-shaped ears, typical of the Nasrid Spanish or earlier production. Between the two handles is the robust neck, lightly flared and with a reinforced edge. The decoration is organized in horizontal bands in which, starting from the bottom, geometrical motifs with interwoven half-palmettes alternate. The central band, wider, is characterized by an architectural style motif, sporting a sequence of trefoil arches, and is enclosed by two additional bands featuring the characteristic motif shaped as an eight-pointed star, alternating with a cross motif: the typical pattern decorating the ceramic, covering the lower portions of walls. The three upper decorative bands show interwoven arabesque and a pseudo-epigraphic motif, which appears to have a decorative function. Traces of a green glazing are visible on the whole item. A similar amphora was auctioned by Bonhams on April 5, 2011 (auction n. 18801, lot 82W) and during auction 10814 (Bonhams London, April 29, 2004 lot 325).
