Lot 256

Antonio Biggi (1904 - 1966)

Ascent to Calvary

Signed lower right.

Provenance: Private collection, Rome.

Born in Carrara in 1904, Antonio Biggi moved to Rome in 1929, where, in 1930, he won the Concorso Clementino of the Academy of San Luca with the work "Christ led to Calvary", a subject similar to that of our plaster: given that it is not possible to confirm that it is the same work, certainly the present sculpture can be dated on a stylistic basis to the third decade of the century, with a strong influence of some of the main artists of the time including, above all, Francesco Messina and Arturo Martini. In 1936 Biggi exhibited the plaster "Squadrista" at the Venice Biennale and then attended at the Roman Quadrennial from 1943 to 1959, being appointed, in the mid-1950s, Professor of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and Director of the Academy of Carrara.
