Auction 432 | OLD MASTERS & XIX CENTURY ART Traditional
Lot 242
Signed lower right. Provenance: Private collection, Monza.
The work has been registered by the Pompeo Mariani Archive with the progressive number PM 0056.
This oil on cardboard presents a room of the Monte Carlo Casino, a subject that frequently characterizes Pompeo Mariani's painting around 1910-11. In the foreground, the elegant female figure is described by a complexity of allusive veils which, overlapping, fix lights and shadows with freedom and originality: it is the product of an extremely personal vision and a refined technique, which is found in the concise description of the players gathered around the table a little further away. On the other hand, the chromatic tones and figures correspond exactly to the habits of the Monza painter. These are the traits that identify an autograph work by Pompeo Mariani, in which there is even a deliberate insistence on a mannered personal style, even if it should be noted that the work subjected to the light of Wood's lamp has highlighted some evident recent retouches.
