AUCTION 326 - OLD MASTERS AND 19TH CENTURY AUCTION
Lot 305
A classic example of mid-18th century Ferrarese production, this writing desk, usually positioned against a wall of a study or a reception room, combines the traditional Emilian compositional solidity with the Venetian taste, highlighting the role of Ferrara as a place of encounter between the different style of cabinet-making on the Adriatic side of Italy. The wood of choice for this furniture is walnut, richly veneered as in the case of this specimen. The movement on the front and on the sides accentuates the sense of lightness and elegance of the composition, enriched by the textured finish of the edge of the top. For a comparison, see a similar model (but with two level of drawers on top) in G. Manni, Mobili Antichi in Emilia Romagna, Modena 1993, p. 235, fig. 502.
