Lot 157
Lot with independent expertise for the marketing of antique ivory objects.
On a plexiglass support.
The style and quality of the carving of this small ivory plaque allow a comparison with the work of Christof Angermair, who was, starting from 1613, court sculptor for Maximilian I of Bavaria. Precisely for the prince elector, between 1618 and 1624, he created one of his masterpieces, an ivory and lapis lazuli coin cabinet based on a probable design by Pieter de Witte, now preserved at the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in Munich: the comparison with some of the plaques rectangular of this cabinet, depicting scenes from myth and ancient history with music as a common theme, allows to hypothesize a stylistic analogy with an established creation by Angermair and a probable original placement of our work in a similar context, as part of the decoration of a cabinet or a casket, with elements perhaps united by the theme of Love.
