The artwork is inspired by the famous portrait of Rubens, whose attribution was debated with Van Dyck, kept at the Museè des Beaux Arts in Brussels along with the effigy of her husband.
Jacqueline van Caestre was the wife of Jean-Charles de Cordes, from an aristocratic family in Antwerp. Daughter of Jan Van Caestre, member of the Grand Council of Mechelen. She died in childbirth only a year after her marriage.
