Vespasiano Bignami studiò all'Accademia Carrara di Bergamo, alliedo di Enrico Scuri. Nel 1861 passò da Bergamo a Milano dove divenne uno degli animatori della Famiglia Artistica, associazione che avrebbe avuto larga fortuna in città e si sarebbe posta come alternativa all'Accademia di Brera nella promozione di giovani artisti. Dal 1893 al 1921 insegnò quindi all'Accademia di Brera. Fu abile ritrattista e ricercato in Italia e all'estero come decoratore. Pittore che si incontra raramente sul mercato.
