One of the greatest representatives of the most dreamlike, dreamy and mysterious aesthetics of international Symbolism, Lucien Lèvy-Dhurmer engages in this work with an allegorical subject, which only apparently could be traced back to an academic type theme, linked to pure form and classical symbology: the artist from Algiers expresses the ideal of "Justice" by linking it to mean more depth and more current for the time. The absence of the sword of the sanction in advantage of the balance of equity and of the book symbolizing the strength of the law, the rising sun in the background and the possible dating of the work on a technical basis around the year 1906, can trace the allegory back to the end of the famous process against Alfred Dreyfus, rehabilitated in that year. The image of Justice thus becomes, in its contextualization, a symbol of humanity capable of defeating any abuse and prevarication.
