Auction 360 | OLD MASTERS & XIX CENTURY ART - Dipinti antichi e antiquariato Traditional
Lot 290
This marble relief is inspired, with minimal variations, by the model of the Mater Dolorosa by François Girardon, presented by the sculptor at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Paris on 7 July 1657 and included, after being in various French museums collections, into the collections of the Louvre at the beginning of the 19th century. Two preparatory models of the same subject are mentioned by the sources, one in terracotta and the other in plaster, and a replica in gilded terracotta, of unknown location today. In addition to the marble original, it should be mentioned a bronze oval exhibited in Düsseldorf in 1971, then part of the Ciechanowiecki collection, London ("Europäische Barockplastik am Niederrhein: Grupello und sein zeit", Düsseldorf Kunstmuseum, Düsseldorf 1971, p. 366, cat . 332).
