AUCTION 326 - OLD MASTERS AND 19TH CENTURY AUCTION
Lot 324
Case: 62x52 cm.
Lot with independent expertise for the marketing of ivory
This precious and unusual jewel consists of a double necklace, with seventeen beads en échelle in ivory and a multi-strand 18 kt golden chain for a 150 gr of weight with a small ivory skull carved in a realistic way at one end, a cross in carved ivory at the other, an ivory ring at the end.We can assume it is a Masonic ritual jewel due to the strong symbolism of its components: the number of beads, seventeen, is considered the number of the Temple and of the Templar Knights thus assuming a strong meaning both initiatory and esoteric. Seventeen is also a number that reveals the Masonic interference in historical events: in 1717 modern Freemasonry was born (1717 is a number made up of the union of two 17); in Freemasonry represents the 17th degree the Knight of the East and of the West, the one who has the revelation, which represents at this degree the unfolding of the Apocalypse. This knight-Mason is given the ability to interpret the design, " the revelation ", of apocalyptic facts, or reading the symbols contained in some events, apparently random and distant in time, for him all attributable to a single organizational matrix, Freemasonry, operating its own political design hidden from the uninitiated. Skull and cross, which can also be interpreted as two crossbones, classically pirate symbols, are also typical of the complex Masonic iconography, symbolizing the victory of the spirit over the body: the skull, emblem of wisdom, knowledge and the spirit of man, dominates the two crossbones and divides into four the body. The skull represents the mind, the reason, while the bones are the image of the corporal and physic sphere: according to the Masonic legend, the builder of the Temple of Solomon Hiram Abif was murdered and his body was found buried under an acacia branch, two tibias and the skull, as in the Templar flag. The skull with crossbones is found in the so-called Masonic "meditation chamber", a place of preparation for the initiatory path of the future Mason.
