AUCTION 326 - OLD MASTERS AND 19TH CENTURY AUCTION
Lot 227
Defects and chips. Mark: "G.B.V." with crown
This pair of vases well represents the eclectic taste of the late nineteenth century, in which historicism and imaginative decorations are accompanied by highly inventive modeling. If the structure seems to recall the classic "urn" shape, the base and above all the decorations, modeled and painted, instead look to the eighteenth-century decorativism, reworked with a richness and an abundance of particular characteristics of the late 19th century taste. A similar version of these vases is in a private collection (AA.VV., "Fiori & Essenze dell'arte veneta nella pittura ceramica di Nove", exhibition catalogue, Nove 2010, pp. 84-85).
