AUCTION 263 - OLD MASTERS AND XIX CENTURY
Lot 224
The painting is accompanied by a card by Prof. Luciano Anelli, May 1984.
The painting is attributable to a Venetian student of Jacopo Tintoretto.
This intense and noble portrait represents the Venetation nobleman Sebastiano Erizzo, descendant of one of the most conspicuous families of the nobility of the Golden Book. Senator first and then member of the Council of Ten of the Serenissima Republic, literate, translator of Plato, collector and expert of numismatics. Of the many written works, he was famous at the time for "Le sei giornate" (1554), a youthful work that collects a collection of novellas of style and ambience, and which had numerous reprints. The Venetian Erizzo's family had twice kinship with the nobility of Brescia. The artwork in question, slightly cut out on the four sides, leads to a verse mutilated, dedicatory and praiseworthy, which must be interpreted in this way: "SEBASTIANUS ERICIUS SENAT. GRECAE, et LATINAE (...) PERITUS / NUMISMATUMQUE (...) OBIIT. 1585". Naturally in a portrait of this kind, fine in the brushstroke and really high in the introspective and phycological surrender, one cannot pass in silence the name of Jacopo Tintoretto. The formal setting, the finesse of the brushstroke; the dense clustering of the color in a rich pigment, the cut of head three-quarters on the bust just mentioned, are all elements that refer with confidence to the Venetian school of Jacopo Tintoretto.
