AUCTION 255 - OLD MASTERS & XIX CENTURY
Lot 280
Stamp St. Petersburg 1886. Share of silver 84 zolotniks (875/1000). Liturgical crucifix that was used by Orthodox priests for blessing the faithful. Christ has at his sides the Madonna and St. John, above is God the Blessing Father, below is the skull of Adam. On the back are the following engravings: the cup of Eucharistic communication; the pitcher with bread and wine; the instruments of the passion, the column of the scourging and the ladder with which Christ was hoisted on the cross; the dove symbol of the Holy Spirit. The orthodox crucifix is easily recognisable by the four nails, in fact both the feet of Christ have nails through them, unlike the Catholic crucifixes in which the overlapping feet are pierced with a single nail. Object rarely available on the market, excellent craftsmanship and in excellent condition.
