Lot 216
Painted stories on the menus of the 2nd Army General Staff.
Series of extraordinary and very rare satirical/humorous cartoons from February/March 1916 on the events of the Triple Entente. The pictures mainly depict the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph, known as Cecco Beppe at the height of Irridentism, and Kaiser Wilhelm II at the time of the Triple Alliance. The works most probably originate from the menus prepared for the 2nd Army Canteen of the General Staff, as recorded in an exhibit from 1917. They vary in size: the smallest measures 20 cm high by 10 cm wide. In principle, the dimensions are similar.
The style of the drawings is reminiscent of authors such as Eugenio Colmo known as Golia, Aroldo Bonzagni, A. Bertiglia with this reference to what were called the ‘trench newspapers’, the most famous of which was La Tradotta.
