ASTA 193 - FINE CHINESE, ASIAN & ISLAMIC WORKS OF ART
Lot 396
This important painting portrays a parade of Turkish soldiers, recognizable by their uniforms and headgears, escorting a palanquin. The palanquin allegedly belongs to Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II (?) because of the tughra, the emblem of the Sultan, embroidered on the fabric. Some Arab men with their traditional white dress (thawb) are portrayed in the desert behind the parade, to make clear that the illustrious pilgrim has almost reached his destination. Signature and date are in the lower left corner.
