Michelangelo Antonioni Biography

Michelangelo Antonioni (1912 - 2007) was an Italian director, producer, editor, short story writer and screenwriter. Antonioni developed his interest in theater and cinema while a student at the University of Bologna, and began writing for a newspaper published in his native Ferrara. He continued to do so until the late 1930s, severely criticizing Italian films of the "white telephone" era. His first essay in cinema was a documentary in a mental hospital, which was never completed. In 1939 he moved to Rome to work on the Universal Exhibition scheduled for 1943 and began collaborating with articles for the Cinema. The following year he enrolled as a directing student at the Experimental Center. His real career began in 1942, with his collaboration on the screenplay of Rossellini's A Pilot Returns. His output will make him known for his intricate aesthetics and extremely challenging, yet escapist and mostly baffling films. He focused more on the portrayal and design of his enigmatic film productions rather than the story and characters of the film and preferred contemplation instead of action. The most notable line of work of this director who "redefined the concept of narrative cinema" and challenged the conventional way of storytelling, was his trilogy which included the films "L'Avventura", "La Notte" and "L 'Eclipse', all of which were made in the early 1960s. His enviable body of work also included films such as 'Love Story', 'The Girlfriends', 'Blow-Up', 'The Passenger' and "Zabriskie Point", among others. Antonioni's cinematic contributions earned him an honorary "Oscar" in 1995. Over the years he has received the "Silver Ribbon" from the "Italian National Union of Film Journalists" eight times. He remains one of three directors who have won the Golden Bear, the "Golden Lion" and the Palme d'Or, and the only one to have received the "Golden Leopard" along with the other three awards. mentioned.
