Domenico Baccarini Biography

Domenico Baccarini was born on 16 December 1882 in Faenza.
He began attending the School of Arts and Crafts directed by the painter A. Berti, studying under the guidance of M. Campello. He followed courses at the Academy of Florence and returned to Faenza, making small decorative models to be reproduced in majolica for the Fabbriche Riunite. In 1903 he fled to Rome with Bitta, his model and inspiration, where he met new friends and supporters such as Giuseppe Sangiorgi, Guelfo Civinini, Alberto Gasco and Giovanni Prini. Returning to Faenza, he worked for the Minardi Brothers' majolica factory, exhibited three of his drawings at the 1905 Venice Biennale and participated in the 1906 Art Exhibition in Milan at the invitation of Vittorio Pica. In 1905-1906 his friendship was born with the writer Antonio Beltramelli, from whose short stories he drew inspiration for many drawings. In Rome at the Sangiorgi antique dealer, he made six illustrative drawings of the work in the fields which were then reproduced on postcards. Baccarini was essentially a designer and modeller and also tried his hand at oil and pastel painting, experimenting with engraving on wood, copper and lithography. He had a great influence on a group of young men of letters and men of culture. Baccarini's art was influenced by the eclectic culture of the time and one can find echoes of the nineteenth-century tradition, Pre-Raphaelite modules, the last Segantini and Pelizza da Volpedo, Liberty and the Secessions, but always dominated by Romagna realism. His drawings represent the most representative nucleus of his work and among the repeated subjects there are the self-portrait, his mother, his sister, his daughter Maria Teresa. Overall, the largest number of Baccarini's works is found in the municipal art gallery of Faenza, but important selections are in private collections in Faenza such as those of Francesco Papiani, Rino Emiliani and Vincenzo Ghirlandi. Two terracottas are preserved in the Pinacoteca dell'Accademia of Ravenna and a drawing in the Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.
He died in Faenza in 1907.
