Hans Burgkmair (known as the old man) was born in Augsburg in 1473 and is a well-known painter and engraver of woodcuts often used to illustrate books. Considered one of the first German painters influenced by the Italian Renaissance, Burgkmair was also the first printmaker to use chiaroscuro in his woodcuts.

Hans Burgkmair Biography

Hans Burgkmair (known as the old man) was born in Augsburg in 1473 and is a well-known painter and engraver of woodcuts often used to illustrate books. Considered one of the first German painters influenced by the Italian Renaissance, Burgkmair was also the first printmaker to use chiaroscuro in his woodcuts.
His most famous works were created for a large series of woodcuts entitled "The Triumphs of Maximilian", for which he executed approximately half of the pieces. Burgkmair was also appreciated for his portraits and frescoes, including the decoration for the house of an Augsburg merchant.
From a technical point of view, Burgkmair was a great innovator of chiaroscuro, anticipating trends and tastes, both for colors and for the composition of the blocks.
He died in Augsburg in 1531.
