Ugo Marano Biography

Ugo Marano (1943-2011) studied mosaic at the Accademia della Reverenda Fabbrica di San Pietro in Vaticano and the Accademia del Mosaico in Ravenna. He approached the art of ceramics in the mid-60s, attending the Vietri ceramic factory Ri.Fa. by Matteo Rispoli, where he started the "MuseoVivo" project with the aim of modernizing traditional ceramic production. Going beyond the concept of functionality of the ceramic object, he creates works entitled "Egostrumenti" and "Antipavimento" and formulates the theory of "Antirestoration". In 1979 he inaugurated the "Fabbrica Felice", defining it as a "work architecture in which expressive activities based on the principle of individual and collective unconscious realization are developed". In 1982 he exhibited his "Manifesto of the artist's book" at the Center Georges Pompidou. In 1991 he participated in the XVIII Triennale of Milan and founded the potters' association "Vasai di Cetara", a community of student ceramists in continuous transformation, with the aim of carrying out creative work free from academic preclusions or dogmatic schemes. In 2006 he presented his works in a solo exhibition at the International Museum of Applied Arts in Turin. In 2011 he participated in the exhibition "The state of the art - Campania" as part of the Italian Pavilion of the 54th Venice Biennale.
