Battista Naldini Biography

Battista Naldini is an Italian painter born in Fiesole around 1537. He studied and worked as Pontormo's assistant for eight years (1549-57) and subsequently moved to Rome to continue his studies.
From 1565 to 1571 he collaborated with Vasari in the pictorial decoration of Palazzo Vecchio. Towards the middle of his career, the painter abandoned the manner of Pontormo and approached the artistic current of Andrea del Sarto, then developed the influence of the mannerism of Bronzino and Vasari.
He created paintings on the occasion of important events such as the funeral of Michelangelo and the wedding of Francesco de' Medici to Joanna of Austria. He became famous as a decorator for Francesco's "Studiolo" in Palazzo Vecchio and for the creation of the Pietà of S. Maria Novella in 1572. In "The Nativity" (1573) and "The Presentation at the Temple" he showed a strong tendency to mannerism, the same in subsequent works, such as the frescoes in Rome after 1574 for S. Giovanni Decollato and the Trinità dei Monti, he accentuated his artificial style in the triptych of S. Martino a Maiano. (1584) and in the Conception of S. Francesco di Volterra (1585). He held the role of consul of the Academy of drawing arts established by Cosimo I several times and had an important painting school also attended by Francesco Curradi and Domenico Passignano. Died in Florence in 1591.
