200 CHINESE, ASIAN, ISLAMIC AND INDIAN ART
Lot 358
Of round shape, the shoulder engraved with bold Arabic religious inscriptions in knotted Kufic script highlighted by substantial silver inlay remains over a background of interlaced split palmettes and toothed spiral motifs interrupted by cartouches depicting characters engaged in different activities, among which courtly scenes and an arm wrestling. The outer bottom chiselled with a lobed medallion containing arabesques with traces of the original silver inlay, likewise, the inner bottom shows another round medallion engraved with three characters over sprays and palmettes still showing the points that must have hosted the original silver inlay, now lost due to wear. The rim also bears a partially inlaid decoration of running animals. Similar metalwares set in the tradition of Herat, a very important centre for inlaid metalworks until Chingiz Khan invaded Khorasan in 1220s. Before the Mongols, a large number of craftsmen fled West and a number of inlay centres sprang up in Western Iran, Anatolia, Egypt, Iraq and Syria.
