Lot 443

Vittorio Zecchin (1878 - 1947)

Detail of the facade of Ca' D'oro after the Franchetti restoration.

Provenance:
The artist's gift to the friend Amedeo Fuga.
For inheritance to the actual owner.

Signature lower right. In coeval frame.

Even the small picture is probably born from a request of Emilio Fuga to friend Vittorio: to walk through the history invite us very specific elements, starting from the portrait subject.
The picture represents a detail of the facade of Ca’d'Oro, the famous Gothic palace in Venice, which faces the Grand Canal not far from Rialto; the golden light that ticks spreads on it causes us to refer sensibly to the stories of 1400, which describe the facade covered in parts of gold leaf; and show you the shapes finally brought back to the original’by the passionate will of Baron Giorgio Franchetti. After almost complete restoration (1916) Giorgio donated the Palazzo to the’Italia, so that it would be an art space for the citizens. Right in the point depicted by ticks (as in others) there was therefore previously, and well known to the Venetians in life towards the end of the 19th century, a superfetation that altered the facade. Probably the painting, even in its small size, celebrates with gratitude the new birth of Ca’ d'Oro in beauty and greater simplicity.
Emilio Fuga was familiar with the Franchetti family. This is done starting from his job, carried out from 1897 to 1955 as head of the Sales Office in the Murano Crystal, a firm conceived, promoted and desired by Baron Raimondo Franchetti, inspired entrepreneur, and father of Giorgio.
Emilio’s relationship with the stamps was facilitated by the values shared between them: his love for the arts and their preservation, and his active orientation towards the development of the territory in which they operated. It is difficult to think that the presence of this picture in Emilio’s house is a coincidence.
And there is another very suggestive aspect: the picture was never hung on the wall. None of those who attended Fuga house remember it. During a reorganization not many years ago emerged from a small stack, in Emilio’s study, next to many documents related to the crystal shop. Why is this work so bright and pleasant, with precise brushes that make it both true and ornamental, had not been highlighted, enjoyable by all the guests of the house? The other painting had been well exposed, as had the dry chalks of the caricatures of the group of friends… The detail of the renovated facade of Ca’ d'oro has remained instead in an intimate space, in Emilio’s studio, and may also have never been hung on the wall; perhaps for Emilio it has remained as a dear memory of Giorgio Franchetti; and perhaps had been commissioned– in a way unfortunately untimely – just to give it to him.
