Auction 365 | AFRICA, OCEANIA & AMERICA - ARTE AFRICANA Traditional
Lot 37
Baulè female sculpture of discreet quality of carving and proportionate volumes, characterized by the modest style of the hairstyle with spherical curls, the hands composed in a protective maternal attitude on the belly, and a body with defined and massive volumes, detailed details, which call to mind expressive styles of other ethnicities such as Agni or Attie. These influences lead us to place the geographic provenance of this sculpture inside the region of the Lakes of the Ivory Coast, that although not particularly extended, contains a myriad of populations and ethnic groups characterized by cultural contaminations and stylistic influences.
As for its use, it could have belonged to a diviner to convey messages to the world of spirits, or simply be the representation of an ancestor.
Not particularly ancient, however, it is to be considered a good quality sculpture.
Measures: 30.5 x 10.0 x 9.5 cm
Starting price: € 800,00
Estimate: € 800,00 - 1.200,00
